Following an incident on April 1st, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced that a portion of I-95 in Northeast Philadelphia will be closed for days. An oversized load collided with a Conrail bridge at 1:30 p.m., causing significant structural damage.
The situation: No one was injured in the collision, but the result is a closure of the northbound I-95, which is expected to impact traffic severely. Drivers are being rerouted via the Betsy Ross/Aramingo Avenue Interchange.
PennDOT is warning of significant delays and backups on both I-95 and the detour routes. The agency is recommending that drivers avoid the area if possible and use alternative paths to their destinations.
Conrail contractors are currently working on repairing the bridge, and while the repair timelines are not fully determined, it is clear that the impact on travel in the region will be substantial for the duration.
Motorists in the area can stay informed on traffic conditions via PennDOT's website, which will provide updates as the road closure persists and until normal traffic flow is restored.
