Michigan State Police will run a big enforcement blitz for commercial vehicles in the I-96 construction zone in Ionia County on Tuesday, September 23.
Why now: Crashes have gone way up in the area since lane closures started back in March. Some of these crashes have led to serious injuries and even death.
- The crackdown will cover I-96 between mile marker 67 and into Kent County.
- Officers from all over Michigan will be looking for speeding, tailgating, improper lane changes, and using a phone by hand while driving.
On August 26, a four-vehicle crash in the same area took one life and put two others in the hospital with serious injuries, according to local police.
This isn’t the first time for a traffic blitz in the area — a similar operation took place just last week on September 17.
The extra patrols are only scheduled for one day, and the focus is squarely on commercial vehicles in the current construction zone.
