Two people died in a multi-vehicle crash involving a box truck and a semi on I-70 near New Market, Maryland, Sunday afternoon.
What happened: Maryland State Police say it started around 4:10 p.m. when a BMW SUV, heading west, rear-ended a box truck just before Route 75. The box truck then crossed the median and hit a tractor trailer going eastbound.
- The box truck and tractor trailer both went off the road into the woods and caught fire.
- Both box truck passengers died at the scene. Their names have not been released yet as families are being notified.
- The truck drivers were flown by helicopter to the hospital for treatment.
- The BMW driver refused medical treatment at the scene. Two BMW passengers were taken to a hospital with injuries.
On the ground: All lanes between Route 75 and Route 27 were shut down as police, fire crews, and highway officials responded. Large detours were needed while crews handled the crash and fire, according to Maryland State Police.
What's next: The crash remains under investigation by the Maryland State Police Crash Team. All causes are being considered, but no charges or reasons have been announced yet.
