Bystanders pull trucker from burning semi after river plunge

A semi truck crashed off the I-81 bridge near Verona, Virginia, around 4:30 p.m. on June 7. The truck ended up in Middle River and caught fire after sliding off the northbound side of the interstate.

The rescue: Witnesses saw what happened and jumped into action, pulling the truck driver from the submerged cab before emergency crews could get there.

  • The driver was airlifted to a local hospital for needed care.
  • Firefighters put out the flames and worked to keep diesel from reaching the river.
  • Authorities then cleared the wreck and worked to reopen the area.

Augusta County Fire-Rescue thanked the bystanders who helped save the trucker. No new updates on the driver's condition have been released.
