Bystanders pull trucker from burning semi after river plunge

A semi truck crashed off the I-81 bridge near Verona, Virginia, around 4:30 p.m. on June 7. The truck ended up in Middle River and caught fire after sliding off the northbound side of the interstate.

The rescue: Witnesses saw what happened and jumped into action, pulling the truck driver from the submerged cab before emergency crews could get there.

The driver was airlifted to a local hospital for needed care.
Firefighters put out the flames and worked to keep diesel from reaching the river.
Authorities then cleared the wreck and worked to reopen the area.

Augusta County Fire-Rescue thanked the bystanders who helped save the trucker. No new updates on the driver's condition have been released.
