California is getting a major upgrade to its truck inspection facility on the westbound side of I-80 in Cordelia. Groundbreaking for the new project took place on August 15, 2025.
Why it matters: The old Cordelia weigh station was built in 1958 and can't keep up with today's truck traffic. It has limited parking, only a few inspection bays, and ramps that force trucks to back up onto I-80—sometimes even causing the scales to close during peak times.
- The new facility will be just under a mile from the current spot and will feature better on and off ramps, seven covered inspection areas, and space for long combination vehicles.
- “Weigh In Motion” tech will sort trucks into correct lanes before they pull in, which should keep things moving and help prevent highway backups.
- The station will be able to check up to 1,000 trucks per hour, 24/7.
- Elevated inspection platforms will allow for a better look at domes and the tops of cargo tanks.
Right now, the old scales only handle 500 to 700 trucks daily, with just a handful of scale sets and not enough room to park or inspect during busy periods, according to the Solano Transportation Authority.
The new project is scheduled to be finished by December 2029.
