CHP rolls out new stealth units to catch reckless drivers

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has launched a new initiative to identify reckless drivers by deploying 100 Dodge Durangos across the state.

What's happening: These vehicles are part of the Specially Marked Patrol Vehicle (SMPV) Program.

  • Instead of the usual black and white style, these Durangos retain their original paint to blend into traffic.
  • They come equipped with powerful V8 Hemi engines and discreet emergency lighting.

Why it matters: Sean Duryee, CHP Commissioner, said drivers often change behavior when they see marked patrol cars.

  • "These new patrol vehicles will help us hold them accountable," he noted.

The focus: The aim is to target aggressive drivers on multi-lane highways.

Drivers might face tougher accountability measures with these new discreet Dodge Durangos on the road.
