Jason Browning, the Clay County Highway Superintendent, has been indicted on charges of theft and official misconduct.
The details: Browning allegedly took 16,200 gallons of diesel fuel worth $56,971.60 from the Clay County Highway Department for his personal trucking business, Browning Trucking.
- Investigators found Browning pumped approximately 150 gallons of diesel weekly from the department's supply to fuel his 2007 Peterbilt 379 truck.
- This practice occurred from July 2021 to July 2023, leaving the department operating with less fuel than expected.
Why it matters: The shortage of fuel could have hindered the department's ability to respond effectively in emergencies or large projects, as noted by officials.
Comptroller Mumpower stressed the importance of maintaining accurate fuel inventory records to detect any misuse, according to a Tennessee Comptroller’s Office press release.
Looking ahead: Browning faces one count of theft over $10,000 and three counts of official misconduct. The legal proceedings are ongoing.
