Crane on semi strikes I-27 bridge, damages close lanes

A semi hauling a crane hit the FM 928 bridge over I-27 south of Tulia, Texas on the morning of Tuesday, May 27. The crash happened just after 7:25 a.m., and the impact bent the bridge and dropped concrete chunks onto the road below.

The details: The bridge, marked with a clearance of 16.5 feet, buckled where it was struck by the crane's arm.

  • Southbound lanes of I-27 are closed at FM 928, and traffic is being detoured onto the west service road before the bridge.
  • The FM 928 bridge itself is shut down and, according to Texas DPS, will stay closed for quite a while.
  • The truck driver had minor injuries but was able to walk away.

Cleanup and bridge repairs are ongoing, and there's no estimate yet for when the bridge or the southbound interstate will reopen, according to ABC 7 Amarillo.
