Cyberattack exposes nearly 300,000 Texas crash records to hackers

Almost 300,000 crash records were downloaded without permission from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) after a cyberattack discovered on May 12, 2025.

What happened: TxDOT spotted suspicious activity in their Crash Records Information System. Someone used a compromised account to get access and download the crash reports.

  • The stolen records may contain names, addresses, driver’s license numbers, license plate numbers, and insurance policy details.
  • TxDOT quickly disabled the account once the breach was found.
  • Even though it isn’t required by law, TxDOT is sending notifications to the people affected.

What’s next: Extra security steps are being put in place for TxDOT accounts. The incident is still under investigation, according to TxDOT.

Anyone who gets a notification letter can call a special helpline (1-833-918-5951) for more information or help.
