Diesel mechanic arrested after deadly shooting at Texas truck yard

A diesel mechanic living at a Reeves County truck yard was arrested after a deadly shooting during a night of drinking on Sunday, May 18.

The details: The incident took place at the Wild West Trucking yard on County Road 401 near Pecos, Texas. Salvador Cervantes-Ortiz, who lives in an RV on the company property, was having drinks outside with several others.

  • At some point, Cervantes-Ortiz went into his RV, grabbed a .380 handgun, and loaded it.
  • Witnesses say he then pointed the gun at 36-year-old Jose Marin-Ramos and fired, killing Marin-Ramos instantly.
  • After the shooting, Cervantes-Ortiz fled the yard, but later came back after talking to other employees and witnesses.

Law enforcement response: Cervantes-Ortiz turned himself in to police without any trouble. He is now in the Reeves County Jail on a murder charge, with bond set at $1 million. ICE also placed an immigration hold, according to Beaumont Enterprise.

Police said the case does not involve any gang activity. Both men are originally from Mexico.
