The Department of Transportation rolled out a big new plan on June 27 to help truckers. They call it the “Pro-Trucker Package,” and it brings some major changes that truck drivers have been asking for over the years.
Why it matters: This package aims to cut back on government rules, stop the speed limiter push, put money toward more truck parking, and make it easier for drivers to do their jobs.
- Speed limiters: The Feds will drop the plan to force all big trucks to have speed limiters. A lot of drivers and companies hate the idea, so they’re scrapping it.
- Truck parking: DOT is spending over $275 million to add more places to park semis. The biggest chunk is headed to Florida — $180 million to add 917 spots along I-4.
- Regulation rollback: FMCSA says it’s cutting back on rules that made life hard for drivers, cutting out almost 25,000 unnecessary violations last year and saving the industry millions every year.
- Hours of service: Two new pilot programs will test out ways for truckers to split up their rest breaks and have more control over their workday.
- Old trucks: No plans to require ELDs for trucks older than 2000 models. That’s a win for a lot of owner-operators driving older rigs.
- Fighting double brokering: FMCSA is promising to take action to crack down on illegal brokering, which has been hurting honest carriers and drivers.
- Better tools and info: FMCSA is updating its websites and complaint systems to be easier to use and faster for drivers who need help.
Truckers have been speaking up for years about these problems. “These steps not only improve the daily lives of truckers across America, but also enhance safety for everyone on the road,” said Todd Spencer of OOIDA. The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association praised President Trump and Secretary Duffy for listening to the people who keep America moving, according to the Department of Transportation.
Florida’s new parking project is expected to break ground in the coming weeks. FMCSA’s pilot studies on hours of service will roll out soon.
