Driver with questionable CDL history linked to deadly U-turn crash

A deadly crash happened in August in Fort Pierce, Florida, after a big rig performed an illegal U-turn and a van slammed into the trailer, leaving three people dead.

The driver: Harjinder Singh, 28, is accused of making the U-turn and was later arrested for three counts of vehicular homicide and immigration crimes.

  • Officials say Singh entered the U.S. illegally in 2018 and struggled with English during traffic stops.
  • Investigators learned Singh failed his CDL written exam in Washington state 10 different times between March and May of 2023.
  • He also failed the air brakes knowledge test twice before finally passing. Washington state later gave him a CDL, as did California.

What bodycam showed: Footage from July, a month before the crash, showed Singh getting a ticket in New Mexico for speeding. The officer had a tough time communicating with Singh, according to Fox News.

In court: Singh pleaded not guilty. Questions about how he got a commercial license while not fluent in English are now at the heart of an ongoing lawsuit between states and the feds. Singh remains in custody with further legal action expected soon.
