DUI scooter driver charged after deadly Portland semi truck crash

A crash involving an e-scooter and a semi truck in Northeast Portland took place around 3 a.m. on August 17, 2025. The e-scooter, driven by 21-year-old Jayden Calkins, collided with the passing tractor trailer at Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Holladay Street.

The details: Calkins had a passenger, 24-year-old Gerardo Ortiz Henriquez, riding with him on the scooter. Ortiz Henriquez died at the scene. Calkins was seriously hurt in the crash.

  • The investigation found that Calkins was allegedly under the influence and driving recklessly.
  • The truck driver fully cooperated with police and was not found at fault.
  • Calkins turned himself in a month later on September 17 and now faces charges of second-degree manslaughter, DUI, and reckless driving, according to OregonLive.

The semi driver was initially considered a suspect, but police later said his actions did not cause the crash.
