DUI scooter driver charged after deadly Portland semi truck crash

A crash involving an e-scooter and a semi truck in Northeast Portland took place around 3 a.m. on August 17, 2025. The e-scooter, driven by 21-year-old Jayden Calkins, collided with the passing tractor trailer at Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Holladay Street.

The details: Calkins had a passenger, 24-year-old Gerardo Ortiz Henriquez, riding with him on the scooter. Ortiz Henriquez died at the scene. Calkins was seriously hurt in the crash.

The investigation found that Calkins was allegedly under the influence and driving recklessly.
The truck driver fully cooperated with police and was not found at fault.
Calkins turned himself in a month later on September 17 and now faces charges of second-degree manslaughter, DUI, and reckless driving, according to OregonLive.

The semi driver was initially considered a suspect, but police later said his actions did not cause the crash.
