A dump truck driver from Georgia died in a crash on the morning of June 17, 2025, after losing control going down the steep six-mile descent of eastbound I-40 into Old Fort, North Carolina.
The details: Ralph Hibbert, age 65, was hauling ballast for railroad work when his brakes failed as he neared Exit 73. Witnesses say Hibbert pumped his brakes and swerved, trying to avoid cars at the bottom of the ramp.
- He was estimated to be traveling at 75 to 80 mph as he exited the interstate, skipped the emergency runoff ramps, and crashed into a building under construction across from the stop sign at Bat Cave Road.
- The truck went airborne for about 85 feet and Hibbert was ejected from the cab, according to WLOS News.
- No other drivers or people at the site were hurt.
Community response: The town of Old Fort paid tribute to Hibbert for his brave actions, saying he "steered away from others and prevented what could have been a far greater tragedy." Locals have left flowers and notes at the Arrowhead Fountain in his honor.
There is no word yet on official funeral plans. Authorities confirmed Hibbert was not employed by the railroad company he was hauling for, but was helping with post-storm recovery efforts.
