Extra officers to target move over law violations in June

Truckers and other drivers in Iowa will see more law enforcement watching for Move Over Law violations from June 17 to June 19, 2025.

What to expect: Extra officers will be out across the state during these three days. They're looking for drivers who don't change lanes or slow down when passing vehicles on the shoulder that have flashing lights — including emergency vehicles, tow trucks, semis, and passenger vehicles with flashers or hazards.

  • Iowa’s Move Over Law has been in place since 2002.
  • If you break this law, you can get a fine of $210.25.
  • If not moving over causes property damage, injury, or a fatality, your license could be suspended for 90 days up to a year.

Why it matters: Dozens of tow truck drivers, police, and emergency workers lose their lives every year in roadside crashes. Hanifen Towing, a long-running company in Des Moines, lost two workers in 2011 while they were helping on the side of the road. "Our hearts are with the families and community who still mourn this unspeakable loss," shared Matt Hurd from Hanifen Towing, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

The traffic enforcement push is a joint effort between the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau and Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force. Their goal is to save lives and make Iowa roads safer for everyone.
