The Wyoming Department of Transportation says the westbound Green River Tunnel on I-80 should open back up by the end of November, after being closed for months following a deadly pileup.
What happened: The westbound tunnel near Green River was shut down on February 14, 2025, because of a fiery 26-vehicle crash inside the tunnel. Three people died and the tunnel was badly damaged.
- When the tunnel reopens, speed limits will be lowered since not all repairs will be finished, especially the lighting.
- Before traffic can fully return to normal, eastbound drivers should expect a weeklong detour, since crews still need to remove barriers and move equipment out.
- Final tasks like striping, putting up guardrails, and signing will continue while the tunnel is open for winter.
What’s next: WYDOT plans to have winter traffic moving through the westbound tunnel by the end of November, but warns that some work will still be ongoing until everything is complete.
