A fire involving a Tesla Semi blocked a section of I-80 in California for 15 hours on August 19, 2024.
The details: The truck, driven by a Tesla employee, crashed around 3:13 a.m. It ran off the road during a turn and hit a tree, igniting its lithium-ion batteries.
- First responders used 50,000 gallons of water to put out the fire and cool the batteries.
- CAL FIRE used aircraft to spray fire retardant as a precaution due to toxic fumes.
- Westbound and eastbound I-80 were closed for 14 and 15 hours respectively for safety and cleanup.
No injuries were reported. The NTSB will continue to investigate and issue safety recommendations, according to NTSB.
