Florida bill would impound trucks for undocumented drivers

A Florida lawmaker wants police to arrest any undocumented migrant found driving a commercial vehicle, like a semi truck, in the state.

What's new: The bill, SB 86, was filed on September 25 by Senator Don Gaetz. If a law enforcement officer finds an undocumented migrant behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle, that person must be taken into custody and turned over to federal authorities.

  • The bill says the truck or commercial vehicle would be impounded if this happens.
  • The owner of the truck could face a heavy $50,000 fine to get it back.
  • Any company or person whose truck was involved would not be allowed to operate in Florida until the fine is paid in full according to the bill text.

When would this take effect? If the bill becomes law, these rules would start July 1, 2026.
