FMCSA drops speed limiter plan after strong pushback from truckers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has officially pulled back its plan to require speed limiters on heavy-duty trucks.

Driving the news: On July 23, 2025, FMCSA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) decided to withdraw a 2016 proposal that would have made speed limiters mandatory on trucks.

  • The proposal had called for equipment that would cap truck speeds, but the exact limit was never set.
  • More than 15,600 people left public comments on the plan—about 15,000 were against it, with truckers and groups like OOIDA saying it would hurt their pay, add hours to their days, and make things tougher on the job.

The bottom line: The agencies said there just wasn’t strong enough evidence that forced speed limiters would make highways safer or bring real benefits. The rulemaking is now officially done, so no new speed limiter requirements are coming for truckers.
