FMCSA removes PHOENIX ELD, truckers must switch devices

The PHOENIX ELD was taken off the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s approved list on October 23, 2025.

What to know: Truckers and carriers using the PHOENIX ELD (model PHOELD, identifier PRS973) now have to stop using it for logging hours.

  • FMCSA says you have until December 22, 2025, to swap it out for a different ELD that is still approved.
  • During these 60 days, drivers can use paper logs or other backup methods for hours-of-service.
  • After December 22, anyone found running the PHOENIX ELD will be considered using no ELD at all.

Enforcement officers are told not to ticket drivers for “No record of duty status” as long as they are using paper logs or acceptable backups during this period, according to FMCSA.
