On October 1, the government shutdown led to the Department of Transportation telling over 12,000 people to stop working, with the big hit falling on the FAA.
By the numbers: 93% of the furloughed workers are from the Federal Aviation Administration. The DOT has about 53,000 workers total, and almost 45,000 are at the FAA.
- Other DOT offices, like the Federal Railroad Administration and Maritime Administration, are also sending some workers home.
- Six of the DOT’s 11 smaller groups say they needed about half a day to wind things down.
- More than 41,000 DOT workers are staying on the job, with most of them at the FAA.
Trucking impact: The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which matters most to truckers, says it is carrying on as normal. FMCSA gets its funding from the Highway Trust Fund, not yearly government budgets.
The shutdown happened because Congress couldn’t agree on a spending plan, reported MyNews4.
No changes are planned for truckers’ business with the FMCSA, even while much of the DOT feels the pinch from the shutdown.
