The federal government is moving to shut down Hope Trans LLC after a deadly semi truck crash killed five people on June 28 near Terrell, Texas.
What happened: The crash happened just east of Dallas when a Hope Trans driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into stopped traffic. The driver, Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, is still in jail awaiting trial, with bond set at $2.25 million.
- After the accident, a federal inspection found Hope Trans let drivers operate trucks without proper drug and alcohol testing or inspections.
- The FMCSA said Hope Trans trucks had a 46.2% out-of-service rate and had been in four other injury crashes in the past year.
- Former drivers said the company pressured them to keep driving even when it wasn't safe.
What's next: Hope Trans has 60 days to fix the federal safety problems. If not, the FMCSA says it could order the company out of business, according to CBS Texas.
Records also show the company's insurance could be canceled soon if things don't change.
