Four dead after stolen Camaro causes I-35 bus and truck crash

A major crash with a bus on I-35 near San Antonio, Texas, left four people dead and several others hurt on Thursday, July 17.

What happened: Police say a white Camaro, which was reported stolen, sped down the interstate before crashing into a bus close to Palo Alto Road around 3 p.m. After hitting the trailer attached to the bus, the crash caused the bus to lose control and roll onto its side. An 18-wheeler was also involved in the wreck.

  • Four men jumped out of the Camaro and ran away from the scene. Witnesses say one of them had an AK-style rifle.
  • Two people died at the scene and two more passed away later at the hospital.
  • More than 20 others were taken to local hospitals, with at least three people in serious condition. By Friday afternoon, most had been released, but a child and two adults were still being treated.

Details: Most of the victims were passengers on a bus traveling from Fort Worth to Mexico, operated by Transportes Guerra. Family members say children and elderly were among those hurt.

After the crash, the suspects ran toward a nearby waterway to escape. Police are still searching for them as of Friday, reported CBS Austin.

The southbound lanes of I-35 were closed overnight to investigate but reopened to drivers Friday morning.
