Fuel tanker crash and fire demolishes bridge, closes I-20

I-20 in Aiken County, South Carolina, was shut down early Saturday, June 14, after a tractor-trailer carrying fuel was involved in a crash and caught fire under the Old Vaucluse Road bridge at mile marker 13.

What happened: The tanker was quickly engulfed in flames. Because of the fire, one bridge was badly damaged and another partially collapsed. Emergency crews raced to the scene, and two people were reported hurt, but their conditions have not been released.

  • Both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-20 were closed so workers could clean up and demolish the damaged bridge.
  • Crews worked overnight to remove large sections of debris and clear the road.
  • A detour was set up, and Old Vaucluse Road itself was also closed to traffic while repairs were underway.

Quick work: The South Carolina Department of Transportation brought in contractors who demolished and hauled away the wreckage in less than 24 hours. I-20 was reopened in both directions by Sunday afternoon, reported WACH.

The bridge structure is now gone, and traffic is flowing again on I-20, although repairs above will continue.
