Greyhound bus crashes into parked semis, resulting in fatalities

A tragic accident took place on July 12, 2023, at a rest area on I-70 in Highland, Illinois, where a Greyhound bus struck three parked semis.

What happened: The Greyhound bus was on its route from Indianapolis to St. Louis when it veered off I-70 onto the rest area exit ramp, colliding with the trucks parked on the shoulder.

  • The impact resulted in the deaths of three passengers aboard the bus. Other passengers suffered various injuries ranging from minor to serious, while the drivers of the trucks were unharmed.

At the time of the crash, the rest area had a total of 64 parking spots, including 21 for commercial trucks. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting an investigation to determine the cause and to offer safety recommendations according to the NTSB.

Looking ahead: The NTSB has a planned meeting on May 20, 2025, to discuss the probable cause and consider measures to prevent future incidents like this.
