High out-of-service rates at California truck checkpoint raise alarm

Troopers at a California Highway Patrol (CHP) checkpoint recently ordered almost half of the inspected commercial vehicles off the road in San Benito County, CA.

The details: This checkpoint was set up by CHP's Gilroy Commercial Vehicle Enforcement after receiving many community complaints. They carried out a handful of inspections with surprising results.

  • Total vehicles inspected: 13.
  • Out-of-service orders given: 6 vehicles.
  • Citations issued: 6.

Why it matters: Such high out-of-service rates raise concerns about vehicle safety compliance in the state.

  • Of the violations found, 10 were serious enough to warrant out-of-service designations, but no drivers were taken off the road.

It's a stark reminder of the rigorous standards truckers face and the pressure to keep rigs in top shape to avoid trouble. Thankfully, no incidents or injuries occurred at the checkpoint despite the citations handed out.
