A dramatic rescue unfolded Thursday morning on US Highway 6 in Owensboro, Kentucky, when inmates from the Daviess County Detention Center pulled a truck driver from a crashed and burning semi.
The incident: Around 9:25 a.m., a semi truck lost control near Frederica Street, overturning and nearly hitting a crew working on the road. The crash involved a passenger vehicle and a state highway vehicle, causing a fiery scene, reported Corrections1 News.
- Inmates on the scene acted quickly, using fire extinguishers to control the blaze.
- They smashed a truck window to pull out the driver, Bryan Marcum, who sustained non-life threatening injuries.
What they're saying: "They actually got the fire out. There was leaking fuel. That was the danger from the fire," Daviess County Jailer Art Maglinger noted.
Worth noting: The highway around the accident was closed for about four and a half hours for cleanup. The road reopened around 2 p.m.
State officials are considering awards for the inmates’ heroic actions during the rescue. Marcum is now recovering, a fortunate turnaround in what could have been a much worse situation.
