Lab monkeys escape after semi overturns, no injuries reported

A truck hauling lab monkeys crashed on I-59 north of Heidelberg, Mississippi, around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 28.

What happened: The truck, coming from Tulane University, overturned and several rhesus monkeys escaped onto the highway. Deputies from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene.

  • Officials said the monkeys can be aggressive and are known to carry diseases like hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID.
  • Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries and police were on site searching for the last missing monkey. As of 2 p.m., all but one escaped monkey had been killed for safety.
  • Tulane University will send a team to collect the rest of the monkeys that stayed caged in the trailer.

What to do: If anyone sees the remaining monkey, officials ask them not to approach it and to call 911 instead.

No reports of injuries to the truck driver or first responders in the incident.
