Man fatally struck by semi after exiting ambulance on I-70

A man died after being hit by a semi truck early Monday morning, June 9, on Interstate 70 in Bond County, Illinois.

What happened: Around 3 a.m., an ambulance was traveling on I-70 with a patient in the back. The patient became disruptive, forcing the ambulance to stop on the shoulder.

Once stopped, the man got out of the ambulance and ran into traffic.
He entered a lane and was struck by a semi truck traveling down the highway.
Emergency workers quickly put the man back into the ambulance and took him to a hospital.
Doctors later pronounced him dead from his injuries.

The Bond County Sheriff's office and Illinois State Police are investigating the incident, with more details still to come according to WCIA.
