Man fatally struck by semi after exiting ambulance on I-70

A man died after being hit by a semi truck early Monday morning, June 9, on Interstate 70 in Bond County, Illinois.

What happened: Around 3 a.m., an ambulance was traveling on I-70 with a patient in the back. The patient became disruptive, forcing the ambulance to stop on the shoulder.

  • Once stopped, the man got out of the ambulance and ran into traffic.
  • He entered a lane and was struck by a semi truck traveling down the highway.
  • Emergency workers quickly put the man back into the ambulance and took him to a hospital.
  • Doctors later pronounced him dead from his injuries.

The Bond County Sheriff's office and Illinois State Police are investigating the incident, with more details still to come according to WCIA.
