Michigan lawmakers are looking at a new bill that would stop semis and other trucks from using the far left lane on roads with three or more lanes.
The details: On May 22, 2025, House Bill 4522 was introduced. It says trucks with a gross weight over 10,000 pounds, truck tractors, and combos like semis with trailers, would have to stay out of the left lane.
- There are some exceptions: trucks could use the left lane if they're making a left turn, if there are hazards, or if signs say it's needed during construction or repairs.
- When construction shuts down lanes and leaves only two open, trucks would then need to keep to the right lane.
This proposed change is now with Michigan's Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure for review, according to the official bill text.
The bill doesn't set any new fines yet, as it's still early in the process.
