Michigan's winter storm causes 86 crashes in 24 hours

Michigan residents are bracing for a challenging stretch of weather after 86 crashes occurred in just 24 hours across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. The incidents took place between Wednesday and Thursday, December 12, 2024.

The big picture: The weather has thrown a mix of snow, wind, and freezing temperatures at drivers, leading to hazardous road conditions.

  • Temperatures aren't expected to rise above freezing until the weekend.
  • Snow squalls, black ice, and whiteout conditions have contributed to the chaotic roadways.
  • State troopers are out in force, urging drivers to slow down and stay safe.

By the numbers: The Michigan State Police recorded a staggering 86 crashes over this 24-hour period. They stress that while salt trucks are operating, the extreme cold means the ice isn't melting as quickly as usual.

What they're saying: "Weather doesn’t cause crashes, drivers do!" urged MSP, reminding everyone to keep a safe distance from snow plows and reduce their speed by at least 10 mph below the posted limit.

A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect for multiple counties, with snow accumulation varying from one to four inches in different areas, reported WWJ Newsradio.

Looking ahead: Temperatures are forecasted to rise to around 50 degrees by Monday, which should help in improving road conditions significantly.
