On September 17, a tractor-trailer lost a tire and caused a five-vehicle crash on I-15 in Lindon, Utah. Police soon made a surprising discovery during the cleanup.
The discovery: About an hour after the wreck, a trooper checked the refrigerated trailer and spotted two sets of eyes looking back. The driver, Jacob Ortell Scott, first said he didn't know anything, but later admitted his two younger sisters were inside.
- The girls, ages 12 and 14, had been riding for hours in the refrigerated trailer, locked in at 30 degrees Fahrenheit with no way to get out.
- They started from a milk farm in Huntington and were on their way to Salt Lake City for school tests.
- Their reason for being in the back? Not enough seats up front.
- The sisters told officers that this was not the first time they had traveled this way.
The crash did not hurt the girls, but Scott went to the hospital with a possible broken hand before being arrested, according to KSL.com.
Scott is now facing two counts of aggravated child abuse, both first-degree felonies.
