Heavy rain led to several rockslides on I-40 near the Tennessee and North Carolina border the night of June 18. The worst slide hit near mile marker 450, dumping rocks, trees, and mud across the highway.
The latest: Four different slides blocked the road. No one was seriously hurt, but cars and trucks got stuck in the debris. By June 19, only one semi was left at the site.
- Repairs and cleanup are expected to cost around $500,000.
- The damage at Exit 451 could take longer to fix, especially since crews were already working on repairs from Hurricane Helene.
- Drivers are being told to use I-81 and I-26 as alternate routes while work continues.
The highway should reopen in about two weeks, but some sections need more time, according to Knoxville News Sentinel.
The Appalachian Trail under Exit 451 was also damaged but still passable, and local rafting sites want travelers to know they are open. There's no official word yet on if the repair cost will rise as crews do more checks on the rock and dirt above the highway.
