Multiple semis involved in deadly I-95 pileup during heavy rain

Two people lost their lives and nine others were taken to the hospital after a massive pileup on I-95 southbound in Colleton County, South Carolina. The crashes happened Tuesday, July 22, just before 4:40 p.m. near mile marker 41.

The crash: Troopers say the trouble started with a wreck involving three vehicles, including one commercial truck. Soon after, another crash happened in the same spot. That second collision involved 13 vehicles, with six of those being commercial trucks.

  • Heavy rain created tough driving conditions. Some drivers reported being unable to see ahead at all.
  • First responders worked in rough conditions, with cars and trucks stacked up and even plate glass from a semi scattered across the highway.
  • One person ended up in the river but managed to swim out safely.

Emergency crews kept I-95 southbound shut down at that spot for nearly 11 hours while they cleared the scene and helped the injured, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

The cause of the wreck is still being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
