Truckers heading through the Chicago area will soon have access to over 1,000 new paid truck parking spaces.
What's happening: Outpost, a company based in Austin, Texas, is set to open a 30-acre lot in West Dundee, Illinois. The lot is expected to be operational by late October.
- The facility includes amenities such as a convenience store, office space, maintenance shop, truck wash, and fueling station, all expected to be completed by the spring.
Outpost's Vice President, Pat Hardin, mentioned that the location could serve as a "home base" and staging area for local companies, as well as providing short-term parking solutions for truckers themselves.
Why it matters: The Chicago area has been highlighted as one of the worst in the nation for truck parking shortages, and this new lot aims to alleviate some of that pressure. A 2020 Federal Highway Administration study found that 95% of truck drivers struggle to find parking, and the state of Illinois has faced a decrease in parking capacity between 2014 and 2019.
The new truck parking facility is located conveniently to allow access to the city without the hassle of city traffic, reported the Chicago Sun-Times.
Once fully operational, this lot will surpass the 900 available spots at the Iowa 80 Truckstop in Walcott, Iowa, making it the largest truck parking yard in the country.
