New transportation rules now allow some hazardous materials to cross the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Canada. Starting October 29, 2024, trucks can carry Class 3 and Class 8 materials, like fuel and battery parts.
Why it matters: Truckers can save time on routes. Previously, they detoured to the Blue Water Bridge, which added hours to their trips.
- Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) says this change cuts down over 250,000 miles driven by trucks each year in Michigan.
- The move comes after public comments and meetings with safety officials and first responders.
The safety measures: Trucks carrying these materials will be escorted across the Bridge. The fire systems on the bridge are up to code and regularly checked.
Not everyone is happy with the change. Officials in Windsor voiced safety concerns. However, many in the trucking community see this as a beneficial move.
Driver Brian Wilkins said, "It’s so stress relieving — especially right before the winter," referring to his shorter route now, reported Michigan.gov.
The relaxed rules mean transport on the bridge is expected to see a net gain in safety without a rise in truck traffic. The final decision was informed by over 80 public letters and a hearing held earlier this year.
