ODOT conducts chain inspection on I-84 near Pendleton

On November 7, 2024, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) will conduct a chain inspection on I-84 to teach truckers about chain-up requirements. This will occur on eastbound I-84 at mile marker 217, near Pendleton.

The plan: ODOT, alongside Motor Carrier Enforcement Officers and the Oregon State Patrol, will check truckers' equipment as they enter the inspection site. Speeds will be lowered to 55 mph from mile marker 213 with signage guiding drivers to the right lane.

  • The inspection is part of an effort to prevent prolonged freeway closures during winter from vehicles without proper chains.
  • The event is mainly educational, but regular checks will follow as winter progresses.

What truckers need to know: Trucks with the right traction devices can continue smoothly after inspection. However, those without the necessary gear will have to resolve the issue at Exit 216 or head back west on I-84.

ODOT aims to ensure road safety and minimize disruptions during winter, especially when conditions worsen, according to TripCheck. This check is part of broader efforts to enhance safety on I-84 during the snow season.
