Oklahoma highway sweep sees dozens of truckers arrested by ICE

On November 4, Oklahoma troopers and ICE ran a highway immigration sweep along I-40 near the Arkansas border. The focus was on commercial trucks and the drivers hauling freight through eastern Oklahoma.

The numbers: Officers stopped over 500 vehicles during the 15-hour operation. They arrested 73 people for immigration violations, including 34 commercial truck drivers.

  • Law enforcement teams positioned themselves along entry routes and near weigh stations, looking at driver papers and checking English skills.
  • This was the latest in a string of crackdowns. Another major sweep happened in September further west and led to over 100 arrests, most of them truckers, according to KOSU.

Background: Oklahoma and ICE have a 287(g) agreement, which gives state troopers federal powers to enforce immigration law. The partnership has sparked debate across the trucking world and among locals about the role of state police in immigration checks on highways.

Officials say there may be more operations coming up, especially on busy trucking corridors like I-40.
