Oklahoma turnpike worker killed after semi leaves roadway

One Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) worker was killed and another left in critical condition after a crash involving a semi truck on the Will Rogers Turnpike, east of the Miami exit, on Monday afternoon, August 18, 2025.

How it happened: The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the eastbound semi truck veered off the right side of the roadway.

  • The truck first hit an OTA worker who was on foot, picking up roadside debris.
  • After that, the truck struck a parked OTA vehicle with another worker inside.
  • The worker on foot did not survive. The second worker, who was inside the vehicle, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.
  • The truck driver was not injured in the wreck.

Investigation: Troopers say the truck driver is working with officials and told them he was trying to retrieve a dropped device when he lost focus and left the roadway.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is continuing to look into the crash.
