Oklahoma turnpike worker killed after semi leaves roadway

One Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) worker was killed and another left in critical condition after a crash involving a semi truck on the Will Rogers Turnpike, east of the Miami exit, on Monday afternoon, August 18, 2025.

How it happened: The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the eastbound semi truck veered off the right side of the roadway.

The truck first hit an OTA worker who was on foot, picking up roadside debris.
After that, the truck struck a parked OTA vehicle with another worker inside.
The worker on foot did not survive. The second worker, who was inside the vehicle, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries.
The truck driver was not injured in the wreck.

Investigation: Troopers say the truck driver is working with officials and told them he was trying to retrieve a dropped device when he lost focus and left the roadway.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is continuing to look into the crash.
