A truck hauling an oversize load struck three overpasses on Interstate 81 in Rockingham County, Virginia, on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 23.
What happened: Virginia State Police said the driver, 62-year-old John D. Duggins, was hauling southbound when he hit the Route 704 and Route 867 overpasses, plus a third bridge that was only slightly struck.
- Officers found the rig stopped at a rest area in Augusta County, not far from the incidents.
- Duggins is facing several charges, including property damage, reckless driving, and violating permit rules, according to WHSV.
Road impacts: After the crashes, crews shut down parts of I-81 on Tuesday night to check the bridges for damage. As of early Wednesday morning, Interstate 81 had reopened, but the Route 704 and 867 overpasses are still closed, and will stay closed for a few more days as safety checks continue.
No injuries were reported in the incident, and traffic on I-81 is now moving beneath the affected overpasses.
