Wyoming Highway Patrol is warning drivers with oversized loads to stay out of the Green River Tunnel on I-80, after problems with damage and crashes in 2025.
What happened: On August 21, troopers put the word out after several unauthorized, oversized rigs tried to enter the tunnel near Green River, causing damage and some hit-and-run-type crashes that led to traffic slowdowns.
- Back on February 14, 2025, a 26-vehicle pileup inside the westbound tunnel left three dead and caused serious damage. Since then, repairs are still ongoing, and some lanes are restricted.
- Highway Patrol says anyone hauling oversize through the tunnel or the city of Green River risks a ticket or having their oversize permit pulled.
What drivers need to know: The patrol urges all commercial haulers to follow the specific routes listed on their permits. Unauthorized oversize loads in the area will only make the tunnel repairs last longer and cause more delays through western Wyoming.
There’s no set date yet on when the tunnel repairs will finish or when all lanes will be fully open again.
