Pedestrian killed after being struck by semi at Nebraska truck stop

A deadly accident happened at the Sapp Bros. Travel Center near North Broad Street and Sunset Avenue in Fremont, Nebraska, on Thursday, September 4, around 6:41 p.m.

What happened: Skyler Norman, 70, from Kansas, was walking through the fuel island area at the truck stop. As he crossed in front of a Mack truck, the truck’s lights came on and it started moving forward, striking Norman.

  • The moment was recorded on a dash cam by another driver parked nearby.
  • Norman was rushed to a local hospital but later died from his injuries.
  • The driver of the Mack truck has not been identified and authorities have not released their name.

Big trucks, limited vision: Mike Kuebler, a truck driving instructor, explained, "The truck itself is about 13 feet, six inches tall. It's about 8.5 feet wide and about 70 feet long, and the hood alone is about five feet. It covers a lot of the vision you would normally have in a regular automobile.” Kuebler also mentioned that parking lot crashes between vehicles do occur, but something like this — where a pedestrian is involved — is extremely rare in his nearly 30 years on the road, according to KETV.

The Dodge County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation. No information has been given about possible charges or next steps in the case.
