Pickup driver killed after trying to board moving semi on I-70

A deadly incident brought traffic to a stop on I-70 in Kansas City, Missouri, during Friday’s rush hour on June 13.

What happened: Police say a man driving a black GMC Sierra pickup truck exited his vehicle in heavy traffic, just west of the Blue Ridge Cutoff. He tried to get inside the cab of a nearby semi truck.

  • The semi driver, in a white Freightliner pulling a flatbed, kept moving slowly, trying to avoid the man.
  • The pickup driver began chasing the truck on foot and then climbed up onto the flatbed trailer.
  • He grabbed a strap on the moving trailer, lost his grip, and fell. The man was then run over by the trailer’s rear axle before the truck could stop. He died at the scene.
  • No other injuries were reported.

Traffic impact: Eastbound I-70 at I-435 shut down for nearly two and a half hours, causing significant traffic jams near the stadiums, according to KCTV5.

Authorities have not released the name of the man. All lanes were reopened later in the evening.
