On July 1, 2025, law enforcement in South Carolina stopped a tractor trailer and found a record amount of illegal drugs inside.
The haul: During two traffic stops in Lexington and Richland counties, authorities found 156 pounds of fentanyl and 44 pounds of meth hidden inside the big rig.
- The truck was being run by two brothers from Delano, California, Alberto Rios-Landeros (26) and Chris Guadalupe Rios-Landeros (23).
- The fentanyl alone is enough to kill millions of people, officials said.
- Investigators believe these drugs came up from Mexico and were headed to South Carolina communities.
The charges: Both men have been indicted for conspiracy and for trying to distribute fentanyl and meth. If convicted, they could face life in prison, according to a press release from the Justice Department.
At the scene: The trailer had a legitimate load, but the drugs were packed among the cargo, hidden from view until officers dug deeper during the stop.
This seizure is the largest amount of fentanyl law enforcement has ever found in South Carolina.
