Just before 6 a.m. on October 23, a Donna, Texas school bus driver spotted a semi truck blocking an intersection and knew something was wrong.
The quick response: Ausencio "Homer" Sustaita was running his usual route when he noticed the big rig stopped at Val Verde Road and Frontage Road. Thinking the truck might be broken down, he pulled over, turned on his bus lights, and went to check on the driver.
- Sustaita knocked on the truck's door and window but got no answer from the driver inside.
- The trucker’s daughter was driving behind the rig — both of them were heading to a truck stop, according to Sustaita.
- Sustaita and the daughter worked together to keep the driver alert until first responders arrived.
“Evaluate the situation as quickly as possible because in this case, if it was a stroke, every, every second counts and that can make the difference between life and death,” Sustaita told reporters.
The truck driver was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover, according to KRGV News.
The trucker's family has thanked Sustaita for stepping up and helping save a life that morning.
