Semi and Jeep crash on Peace River Bridge, man rescued

A scary accident happened Wednesday morning, October 22, on the Peace River Bridge in Punta Gorda, Florida. A semi truck and a Jeep ran into each other on northbound I-75 near exit 166.

What happened: Both vehicles pulled over to the emergency lane after the crash. A passenger from the Jeep tried to walk over to the semi by crossing the bridge wall. While doing this, he lost balance and fell about 45 feet down into some mangroves and mud.

  • First responders rushed to the scene, unsure at first if the man had landed in the water below.
  • Charlotte County Fire and EMS used a special aerial rescue technique. Crews rappelled down and lifted the injured man back over the wall to safety.
