Semi and light rail train catch fire in Phoenix crash

A fiery crash happened Sunday night, September 14, in Phoenix, Arizona, when a tractor-trailer and a Valley Metro light rail train collided near I-10 and Washington Street.

What happened: The crash took place around 7:15 p.m. The impact caused both the semi and the train to catch fire. Video from the scene shows the train pushing the truck along the tracks as flames broke out.

  • 20 to 25 people were on the train when the collision occurred.
  • All train passengers made it out safely with no serious injuries.
  • The truck driver was rescued and brought to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Emergency crews quickly evacuated everyone from the train. Firefighters also got the driver out of the semi.

“Crews did a great job evacuating that light rail, and getting that semi truck driver out of there,” Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller told local TV.

Aftermath: Westbound Washington Street between 16th and 20th Streets was closed down so crews could clear the wreck. Train riders faced delays during the cleanup, according to ABC15.

Police have not yet released the cause of the crash. The truck driver is in stable condition as of Monday morning.
