A semi crashed inside the Lowry Hill Tunnel on I-94 in downtown Minneapolis late Friday morning, May 30. The truck tipped over just before 11 a.m. while making a turn to enter the tunnel, causing the trailer's roof to get torn off.
The details: The truck was hauling ammunition, which is allowed in the tunnel under federal rules, according to state patrol.
- The driver, 31-year-old Bachitar Singh from Fremont, California, was wearing his seat belt and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
- There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.
Traffic: Both directions of the tunnel were blocked after the crash, leading to a major backup. Around an hour into the traffic jam, a woman in a passenger vehicle had a medical emergency and died, despite troopers and EMS trying to save her, reported the Star Tribune.
Eastbound lanes reopened about two hours after the incident. Westbound I-94 lanes were open again shortly before 4:30 p.m. Friday. The crash is still being investigated.
