Semi hauling Tesla batteries rolls, causes major backup on I-80

A semi hauling Tesla batteries flipped on Interstate 80 just west of Reno, Nevada near Hirschdale Road early Monday morning, August 11th.

The spill: The truck rolled over before 7:30 a.m., knocking its load of batteries across the highway. No injuries were reported from the accident.

  • Because the cargo included batteries, cleanup crews worked with extra safety steps and slowed down the process.
  • Traffic was backed up past the Nevada state line as crews stayed on scene for hours.
  • CHP Truckee shared, “Cleanup’s gonna take a while, those Tesla batteries aren’t something you just sweep up and call it a day.”

As of 1 p.m., the highway still had major delays, with crews expecting several more hours before reopening all lanes.
