A semi truck cab crashed off the Delaware Memorial Bridge and into the Delaware River early Friday morning, July 11. The driver is presumed dead, according to officials.
The details: The bobtail truck was heading south on I-295 around 3:40 a.m. when it crossed three lanes and drove onto a concrete pad near the anchorage. It broke through a concrete wall and fell into the river below.
- No other vehicles were involved.
- The truck cab was found in about 20 feet of water by search teams later that morning.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the driver, and it's still unknown if anyone else was in the cab when it went over.
TJ Murray, a worker with the Delaware River and Bay Authority for three decades, said, "No one remembers any kind of vehicle going over the side of the bridge" before.
- Several agencies are involved in the recovery, including the Coast Guard, Delaware State Police, and local dive teams.
- A barge and crane from a third-party contractor are being used to help get the cab out of the water, reported 6abc.
- DRBA crews have secured the area to prevent debris from falling into the river during the recovery work.
All southbound lanes of the bridge have reopened. Recovery efforts were stopped for the day at 4:30 p.m. and will start again at 6 a.m. Saturday. The investigation into what caused the crash is still ongoing.
